The Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5500 measures up to all the
standards we've set for a wireless keyboard and mouse combo. This set
has it all – from Bluetooth capability to battery level indicators, to
customizable hotkeys. One of only two Bluetooth-capable keyboard and
mouse duos we reviewed, the MX 5500 uses 2.0 technology to connect the
pair to the Bluetooth-enabled device of your choice, be it a computer,
smartphone or tablet. For those devices that aren't Bluetooth ready, the
set includes a receiver that you can plug into your device and set up
with the accompanying software. Once you have connected the keyboard and
mouse to your device, you'll be able to access your favorite files and
applications from up to 30 feet away. Some users, however, report that
the farther they are from the receiver, the greater the chance for
signal delays and lag time. This combo has a built-in energy-saving
feature that automatically puts the pair into sleep mode when out of
range or not in use. The wireless keyboard can function for up to six
months before its four AA alkaline batteries need to be changed. The
mouse operates by way of a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery
that needs to be charged for about two hours after approximately 15 days
of use.
A unique feature found on the MX 5500 keyboard is the integrated LCD
screen, located at the top edge of the keyboard. This convenient screen
displays the date and time, temperature, calculator functions, music
selections and incoming message notifications. Imagine how advantageous
this feature can be if your keyboard and mouse are currently set up some
distance away from the monitor. Positioned below the LCD screen are
enhanced F keys and hot keys that can be programmed to access various
applications, the internet, music files and more. When properly
programmed, you can use these shortcut keys to quickly open all of your
most-visited places.
The mouse is equally as impressive as the keyboard. Not only is it
rechargeable, but it actually comes with a rechargeable dock. You can
keep this dock plugged in 24/7, allowing you to charge the mouse or
simply keep it out of harm’s way between uses. A battery level indicator
on the side of the mouse shows, with a series of green lights, the
depletion of the battery. When the green lights disappear and a red
light comes on, the mouse needs to be charged. Users can also take
advantage of the power switch located on the bottom of the mouse. Simply
turning the mouse off when you’re finished working will save a great
deal of battery power.
The Logitech MX 5500’s mouse is equipped with Logitech’s MicroGear
Precision Scroll and SmartShift technology. The SmartShift technology
senses the application in which you are working and will switch from
free-spin scrolling to click-to-click precision scrolling according to
your needs. For example, if you’re in an Excel spreadsheet with
thousands upon thousands of rows, SmartShift will switch to free-spin
scrolling to help you navigate through pages, but will then switch to a
click-to-click precision scroll when you slow down at your desired
destination.

For
users who work and play on a computer for the majority of their day,
the design of a product, especially a wireless keyboard and mouse, is
extremely important. Ergonomically, Logitech’s MX 5500 wireless keyboard
and mouse are excellent. A slight wave in the keyboard puts your hands
at a comfortable angle, and the palm rest supports the lower part of
your hands and wrists. The keyboard can also adjust to different heights
and angles depending on what is most comfortable for the user. It is
very thin with a profile of 1.01 inches, and it weighs only 30.69
ounces, making it easy to pack around. The mouse has a high arch to
match the natural curve of your hand. There are two side buttons, a
convenient scroll wheel and thumb controls as well. The only design flaw
we see in this wireless keyboard and mouse combo is the lack of
spill-resistant keys. Competitor keyboards have integrated channels
under their keypads that drain liquid away and avoid penetration into
the circuitry. Just make sure you don't leave any liquid near this
keyboard.

The
support Logitech provides to owners of the Logitech MX 5500 wireless
keyboard and mouse combo is unmatched. Online support is available, and
with a few simple clicks on their website, you'll be directed to a FAQs
page, a community support board and a downloadable user manual. However,
the wireless keyboard and mouse’s user manual is more of a quick start
guide, and we would have preferred to see an actual manual with more
in-depth instructions. A help center CD is also included with the
package. If you prefer to speak to someone directly, they have a
technical support line you can call as well. To top it all off, Logitech
backs up their products with a three-year warranty. If something in the
hardware of the product breaks or becomes unusable within three years
from the purchase date, Logitech will replace the parts.
To use the Logitech MX 5500 wireless keyboard and mouse combo, your
computer needs to have an extra USB port, a CD-ROM drive and the ability
to access Logitech’s website to download the appropriate drivers. The
wireless keyboard and mouse are compatible with Windows XP and up.
Unfortunately, Logitech doesn’t support the use of the Bluetooth
keyboard and mouse with any version of Mac OS. However, just because it
isn’t supported, doesn’t mean the mouse will not work with a Mac.
Several users reported that they were able to use the keyboard and mouse
with their Mac computers. But Mac users be warned: Although the
wireless keyboard and mouse may function, many of the features may be
unusable.
If you make it your business to have the best accessories to
complement your computer setup, we recommend adding Logitech’s Cordless
Desktop MX 5500 Revolution to your arsenal. This wireless keyboard and
mouse are sure to clean up your cluttered desk and make your workspace
portable. And with Bluetooth 2.0 technology, you can connect to other
Bluetooth devices – becoming the ultimate on-the-go consumer. When
you're working on intense products, Logitech’s built-in hyper- and
click-to-click scrolling makes it convenient to navigate through both
large documents and simple files. When you're playing, the LCD display
and customizable hot keys make accessing your favorite documents and
websites a cinch. We also love that you can be at a distance of up to 30
feet from the receiver and still have control over the wireless
keyboard and mouse. We’ve done the research, and believe us, the MX 5500
is the best combo on the market.
